True to its title, “Is There Something on Your Mind” is a tender, aching ballad about unspoken distance in a relationship. Willie’s vocal delivery is deceptively gentle, gliding over the pedal steel and lush strings, yet his signature behind-the-beat timing subtly hints at the restless creative spirit itching to break free. It’s a song of quiet longing and conversational vulnerability—a template for the heart-on-sleeve songwriting he would perfect on Red Headed Stranger and Shotgun Willie .

For fans of Willie Nelson’s deep catalog, Is There Something on Your Mind represents a pivotal moment just before he shattered Nashville conventions. Originally released in 1969 on the RCA Victor label, this track—and the album of the same name—captures Willie in transition: still bound by the polished “Nashville sound” but already weaving in the introspective, free-flowing phrasing that would define his career.

Available on HDtracks, Qobuz, or via careful rips of the original vinyl or 2000s RCA reissue CDs. Avoid low-bitrate streams; this track deserves its full dynamic range.

This track is a hidden gem for Willie purists. While not a commercial smash like “Hello Walls” or “Crazy” (written for Patsy Cline), it showcases his evolution from hired-gun songwriter to a singular artist. In lossless FLAC, every nuance of his expressive, conversational phrasing is preserved—making it feel less like a vintage recording and more like Willie is sitting across from you, asking the question himself.

Here’s a professional write-up for a lossless FLAC version of Willie Nelson’s Is There Something on Your Mind . A Glimpse of a Country Outlaw Finding His Voice

I love how you say you are right in the title itself. Clearly nobody agrees with you. The episode was so great it was nominated for an Emmy. Nothing tops the chain mail curse episode? Really? Funny but not even close to the highlight of the series.

Dissent is dissent. I liked the chain mail curse. Also the last two episodes of the season were great.

Honestly i fully agree. That episode didn’t seem like the rest of the series, the humour was closer to other sitcoms (friends, how i met your mother) with its writing style and subplots. The show has irreverent and stupid humour, but doesn’t feel forced. Every ‘joke’ in the episode just appealed to the usual late night sitcom audience and was predictable (oh his toothpick is an effortless disguise, oh the teams money catches fire, oh he finds out the talking bass is worthless, etc). I didn’t have a laugh all episode save the “one human alcoholic drink please” thing which they stretched out. Didn’t feel like i was watching the same show at all and was glad when they didn’t return to this forced humour. Might also be because the funniest characters with best delivery (Nandor and Guillermo) weren’t in it

And yet…that is the episode that got the Emmy nomination! What am I missing? I felt like I was watching a bad improv show where everyone was laughing at their friends but I wasn’t in on the joke.
