In 1997, director Barry Levinson released Wag the Dog , a political satire so sharp that it felt dangerous. Based on Larry Beinhart’s novel American Hero (itself inspired by the George H.W. Bush era), the film stars Robert De Niro as a spin doctor and Dustin Hoffman as a Hollywood producer.
