The Crown Qartulad -

Old Mamuka knew the crown was not made of gold. The others in the mountain village of Shatili thought he had finally lost his mind. They pointed to the iron band, rusted and pitted, that sat on the velvet cushion in the tiny stone chapel. “It is a relic of a forgotten king,” they said. “A thing of the past.”

“You love your language so much?” he sneered. “Then let this be its crown. A crown of rust and silence. Speak one more word of it, and I will nail this to your skull.”

Mamuka would just smile, his mustache twitching. “You see iron. I see a story. And a story is told qartulad — in Georgian.”

Mamuka set down his knife. He reached into a leather pouch at his belt and pulled out a small, unremarkable object: the rusted iron circlet. Up close, Nino saw that it was not a king’s regalia. It was too small, too crude. But on its inner surface, barely visible, were scratches. Not random marks — letters. Ancient Asomtavruli script. the crown qartulad

“I want to understand it,” she replied.

Nino found him in a smoky hut, carving a piece of wild pear wood. A fire crackled in the toné oven. Without looking up, he said, “You want the crown.”

That night, she wrote in her journal: Found no gold. Found something better. Found a language that would not die. Old Mamuka knew the crown was not made of gold

Mamuka picked up his carving again. “You see, young historian, a crown made of gold commands obedience for a day. But a crown made of words? That lasts as long as someone remembers how to say ‘mother’ without shame.”

“Vina ar daitsyars ena, is ar daitsyars guli.” (“Who does not know the tongue, does not know the heart.”)

“Go to Mamuka,” they said. “He speaks in riddles.” “It is a relic of a forgotten king,” they said

“Read it,” he said, handing her a magnifying lens.

She looked up, confused. “That’s not a king’s motto. That’s a proverb.”

One cold autumn, when the pass to the lowlands was already choked with snow, a young historian named Nino came from Tbilisi. She had heard rumors of a “crown of words” and braved the frozen trail to find it. The villagers welcomed her with hot khachapuri and sour plum sauce, but when she asked about the crown, they laughed and pointed to the old shepherd.
