They meet Hanuman, the mighty monkey warrior, and his king, Sugriva. Sugriva was also betrayed by his own brother, Vali. They form a pact: Rama will kill Vali and restore Sugriva’s throne; Sugriva will mobilize every monkey in existence to find Sita.
After a fierce duel, Rama kills Vali. The monkey army gathers—millions strong. Scouts are sent to the four corners of the Earth. Finally, Hanuman leaps across the ocean to Lanka.

The film opens with the joyous news: Rama is to be crowned the next king. The entire city rejoices. However, the Queen Kaikeyi, poisoned by the whispers of her crooked maid Manthara, reminds the king of two long-forgotten boons she was granted. The war is cataclysmic. Arrows of light clash with demonic maces. Lakshmana is struck down by a poisoned dart from Ravana’s son, Indrajit. But Hanuman flies to the Himalayas, uproots an entire mountain of healing herbs, and saves him.
The entire city is lit with a million lamps—it is the first Diwali. Bharata, who refused to sit on the throne, places Rama’s sandals at his feet. Rama is crowned king.
