He grabbed a single, forgotten seed packet.
“Uh-oh,” said Patrice.
Crazy Dave stopped bouncing. For once, he was perfectly still. He looked at his taco, then at the Morph Maker, then at the Sunflower who had been quietly photosynthesizing in terror.
The Conehead screamed as it bloated, sprouted a jetpack made of bone, and rocketed through the lab ceiling. Unfortunately, the machine overheated. The resulting explosion launched the Morph Maker 3000 across the city—right into . plants vs zombies zombie maker
CRACKLE—POP—FIZZ.
But instead of copying a plant, it copied the last command entered into the Morph Maker. And the last command had been: “Remove weakness to Butter.”
The Moldable Menace
“We didn’t win,” Dave grinned. “We just made the next version harder to build .”
He grabbed a basic Conehead Zombie. “Subject A. Default: slow gait, one-hit kill with a Magneting Shroom.” He pulled a lever. “Let’s add… , Pole Vaulting speed , and Balloon Zombie’s flight .”
One by one, the zombies reverted. The customized nightmares became shambling idiots again. The Peashooters made short work of them. He grabbed a single, forgotten seed packet
A normal Buckethead stepped in. The zombies cranked the dials. Add: Football Zombie’s tackle. Add: Gargantuar’s health. Remove: weakness to Butter. The result was a metal-clad behemoth that waded through three rows of Peashooters, ignoring Wall-nuts like they were pebbles. It didn’t even flinch at Kernel Corn’s butter.
And the Gargantuar holding the machine? It suddenly developed a new weakness:
Patrice was cornered. “Dave, we can’t fight an army that designs itself!” For once, he was perfectly still
Just as a customized Juggernaut raised its fist, Dave slapped the Imitater onto the machine’s main processor. The Imitater glowed, shuddered, and did what it did best: it copied.
The first wave was subtle. A standard Browncoat walked forward, got zapped by the machine’s residual energy, and suddenly grew . It ripped the screws out of Dave’s fence. Then it added Exploding Imp’s fuse to its back. It waddled forward, hissing.
