Unlike utopias—unreal, ideal spaces—heterotopias are real places that function as counter-sites, reflecting, contesting, or inverting the space of everyday life. 2. Theoretical Context Foucault argued that the present epoch is the age of space (replacing the 19th-century obsession with time/history). He distinguished three types of space:
