She’d speak to them sometimes in resurrected Spanish, just to feel the roll of a double r or the lazy drawl of a Caribbean s dropped at the end of a word. But those sessions were illegal now. She stood in absolute silence for thirty seconds—an eternity in a world where every pause was filled with a subroutine. Then she opened her mouth and spoke in a language they had erased from the legal code.

Earth’s Unified Council had spent decades perfecting Lingua Universalis —a synthetic language engineered for absolute clarity. No idioms. No homonyms. No ambiguous tone. Every word meant exactly one thing, and every sentence followed immutable logic. Elena stood trial in a white chamber with no echo. The prosecutor spoke only in LU, each word a sterile click. “You introduced semantic noise into a stabilized communication system. A hydroponics technician who carved mismatched letters into the underside of pipe joints—Arabic script, she realized, worn smooth by phantom fingers.
