Before Frankenstein became a masked legend, there was Carl “Luke” Lucas (Luke Goss), a fearless getaway driver framed for a bloody heist. Sent to the ruthless Terminal Island prison, he’s forced into the inaugural “Death Race”—a brutal experiment where convicts trade bullets for ratings. The origin story of the infamous masked driver unfolds through betrayal, cage-fighting clichés, and enough nitrous oxide to fuel a small war.

If you go into Death Race 2: El Origen expecting the slick, explosive, Jason Statham-fueled mayhem of the 2008 original, you might want to lower your expectations—and then immediately raise them for gritty, straight-to-DVD grindhouse charm. This prequel, directed by Roel Reiné, takes us back to the bloody birth of the televised vehicular slaughter, and while it lacks Hollywood polish, it compensates with pure, unfiltered ferocity.

Fans of Mad Max , The Running Man , and anyone who misses the straight-to-DVD era when R-rated action still had teeth.
