Before the algorithm knew you better than your mother, before the “Are you still watching?” prompt became a philosophical question, Netflix was a different beast. It was a red envelope. And in 2003, they released a strange, almost forgotten documentary called You Are Here (often stylized as netflix: you are here ).
That’s not a documentary. That’s a time capsule with a warning label.

That’s the identity crisis of 2003. Not "who am I?" but "which I is the real one when all of them require a password?" Maybe that’s the point
Because it was a Netflix original before "Netflix Original" meant anything, rights are a nightmare. The director (who now goes only by a Unicode character: ⚡) has refused all re-release offers. For years, the only copy was a 240p rip on a defunct peer-to-peer network called Overnet.

You Are Here captured the anxiety that came with that freedom. One scene is heartbreaking: Marcus, alone in his dorm, opens all three chat windows simultaneously. He types "I'm fine" to his parents, "lol same" to his goth friends, and "I think I'm disappearing" to his private journal. The camera holds on his face for two full minutes. No dialogue. You Are Here wasn’t a series. It wasn’t a blockbuster. It was a 72-minute experimental documentary directed by a then-unknown collective called "The Continuum." The tagline was simple: “Your profile has been created. Now delete it.”
Today, we talk about "curating your brand." In 2003, we called it "lying." The internet was still a costume party. You could be xX_AngelOfDeath_Xx in one tab and John.Doe.RealEstate in another. There was no LinkedIn cross-referencing your MySpace. There was no facial recognition.
