Marlene held up a hand. “Tom, I hear frustration. But let’s try something different. I’d like each of you to finish this sentence: ‘What no one in this family understands about me is…’”
Tom’s jaw worked. He set his briefcase on the floor for the first time. “I hear… we made her feel like she was the battlefield. Not the daughter.”
The room went utterly still. Even the traffic outside seemed to pause.
Lisa reached over and took Elena’s hand. Elena didn’t pull away. Family Therapy - Clips4sale - Bailey Base - The...
Dr. Marlene Voss adjusted her glasses and glanced at the clock. 2:58 PM. The Henderson family was due in two minutes. She reviewed her notes: Father (Tom, 52, workaholic), Mother (Lisa, 49, anxious), Daughter (Elena, 17, withdrawn), Son (Jake, 14, acting out). Reason for referral: “Constant screaming at home. Elena won’t speak. Jake broke his bedroom door.”
Tom shifted, suddenly uncomfortable. “I didn’t know she was crying.”
“Welcome,” Marlene said softly. “Thank you for coming. Who’d like to start?” Marlene held up a hand
Lisa’s face crumpled. “You heard that?”
However, I’d be happy to write a completely different, original short story about —focusing on emotional conflict, communication breakdowns, and a therapist trying to help a family heal. For example: Title: The Empty Chair
Elena flinched. Jake snorted.
Jake went first, surprising everyone. “What no one understands is that when I broke the door, it wasn’t anger. I heard Mom crying in her room after Dad left for his business trip, and I couldn’t reach her. I panicked.”
At 3:05, they shuffled in. Tom led, briefcase still in hand. Lisa followed, wringing her fingers. Jake slouched in a hoodie, earbuds in. Elena came last, eyes fixed on the floor.
“So,” Marlene said quietly, “maybe today, the work begins. Not fixing anyone. Just listening.” I’d like each of you to finish this
Elena raised her head. Tears slid down, but her voice was steady. “What no one understands is that I stopped talking because every time I did, you two would start fighting about who ruined me. So I decided to be already ruined. That way, you’d have nothing left to fight about.”
Marlene let the silence hold. Then she said, “That is an enormous weight for a seventeen-year-old to carry. Elena, thank you for saying it out loud. Tom, Lisa… what do you hear when she says that?”
