When the picture returned, it was dusk. The same yard, but the grass was dead. The grill was rusted. The sprinkler lay melted on the patio. And in the corner, sitting on the porch steps, was a shape. Too tall. Too still. Its head turned slowly toward the lens. Leo double-clicked

He watched as a kid—maybe eight years old, wearing a blue bathing suit—walked toward the camera. The boy smiled, pointed past Leo’s shoulder, and whispered something inaudible.
