When a group of rowdy street racers (the "Delinquent Road Hazards") startles Mack, a tarp falls off, and McQueen—asleep and dreaming of Dinoco green—rolls out the back of the trailer. He wakes up on the cold, dark asphalt of the interstate, lost and alone. Here, the film executes its most crucial tonal shift.
