The happened last Tuesday in a grocery store.

A manual on “how to be patient” might give a textbook example: Count to ten. Breathe deeply. Listen actively. That’s an example, but it’s sterile.

A father was in line with his three-year-old daughter. The girl dropped a jar of pasta sauce. It shattered. Red spread like a slow explosion across the white floor tiles. The father didn’t count to ten. His face flushed. His jaw tightened. A vein appeared on his temple. For three seconds, he looked like a man about to erupt.
