Early Career & Rise to Fame Abe’s entry into the entertainment world began in the late 1990s as a fashion model and gravure idol. However, her ambition quickly shifted toward acting. Her breakthrough came in 2001 when she was cast in a high-profile role that would define her early career: Rei Ayanami in the Neon Genesis Evangelion theatrical re-release project (the "Death & Rebirth" and "End of Evangelion" films).
